Support Education in the Katahdin Region

STEM program

Project Leader: Matt DeLaney, Director, Millinocket Memorial Library

As we move into an information-based economy, with a heavy reliance on technology, students need to develop their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills and capabilities to prepare themselves for school and the workplace. Millinocket Memorial Library and East Millinocket Library will provide the space, volunteers, books, and curriculum to support STEM Clubs in the region. We are seeking funds to purchase LEGO sets and Dash & Dot Robot sets for use by STEM Clubs at both libraries.

Dash & Dot are robots designed to teach creative problem solving and computational thinking. Dash & Dot help students develop fundamental cognitive processes relevant to all 21st century skills that they’ll carry on throughout life. The robots ignite curiosity and confidence while providing fun and engaging ways of learning the essential skills of collaboration, communication, and digital literacy. Each library will have its own Dash-Dot Robot and iPad, along with a basic set of LEGO blocks.  The LEGO kits will be rotated between libraries.

LEGO startup kits, build stations, baseplates, and storage units for 2 libraries: $844

Dash & Dot Robot Wonder Pack, tablet, and Wonder Brick Extensions for 2 libraries: $916

TOTAL PROJECT COST: $1,760

By offering expanded hours and programming at Millinocket Memorial Library and by working collaboratively with East Millinocket Library, families in the Katahdin Region will have access to fun and supportive STEM learning environments where they can create, discover, and grow together. Both libraries will offer a safe and supportive learning environment open to all age-appropriate children with access to exciting technology and equipment, as well as provide a loosely structured curriculum packed with fun activities, contests, and games for pre-K through grade school learners.
