Discover the Katahdin RegionThe Katahdin Region is a wonderful place visit, to explore and to live. As with any visitor to a new place, having information about how to navigate the area is critical to a rich, comfortable experience. As we found out with the 2016 Millinocket Marathon and Half, a lot of our visitors had no idea where to go throughout the weekend. Most participants and visitors asked for a hand-held map.

The Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce is creating a Katahdin Regional Street Map to showcase our region. The goal of the map is to show a visitor exactly what area the Katahdin Region covers, as well as to display points of interest to visitors. This map will be the physical paper companion to the Discover Katahdin mobile app and the Katahdin Woods and Waters Scenic By-way interactive online map.

The map will be two sided: one side will have a large map showing the entire region; the other side will have zoomed-in maps of several towns: Medway, East Millinocket, Millinocket, Patten, and Island Falls.

The large regional map will highlight major roads, bodies of water, wilderness areas, Baxter State Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and hiking and biking trails. Symbols will show major trailheads, water access, campgrounds, and golf courses. More details will be shown on the zoomed-in town maps on the other side. Town maps will have detailed illustrations of streets, lodging facilities, places to eat, town parks, museums, libraries, gas stations, convenience stores, Town Offices, Post Offices, and other relevant services.

This is a Making Headway in the Katahdin Region project. Your contributions will be matched up to $750. The Chamber is seeking funds to design and print the first batch of 15,000 maps for this season’s summer visitors. A $1.00 donation is suggested for each map, so the cost of future printing and updating will be funded.

Project Budget:

Cartography design and drawing: $2,500

Printing of 15,000 copies: $2,189

Total project cost: $4,689
